Today is my 19th birthday, so I decided to do something that would prove me to be responsible, my laundry and homework. I woke up early just for this. I’m sitting here listening to Megadeth on my iTunes. It’s a song off of their new album, which is ok, much better than the 2 that came before it, but not as good as their first 3.
This was a really good birthday, considering I wasn’t excited about it at all until two days before hand. My mom got me a flannel jacket that is insulated and my girlfriend got me an original pressing of ‘London Calling’ (The Clash) from 1987. The album originally came out in 1979, and then it went out of print for a while, and then someone invented these things called cds and they started printing them again. It’s the same with the Ramones, except the Ramones didn’t get put back in print until the early 90’s.
What is all this knowledge going to get me in life? Unless if I open a record store, it does me no good; I could write books about this stuff, but who would want to read about it? For as long as I can remember I’ve loved music, when I was in 2nd grade I bought Nirvana’s – ‘Nevermind’ and got made fun of for always talking about music. Then in the very beginning of third grade, Kurt Cobain killed himself and I don’t remember exactly how I reacted. My dad said that he had to explain to me what happened and that what he did is never the answer, but other than that there is very little I remember.
I used to find out about bands and start listening to them, then a few months later they would be ridiculously popular. Papa Roach, Korn, Taproot; I knew about all these bands at least 6 months before they were popular. When I was in eighth grade I told my friend mike that he should listen to this band papa roach their really good. He laughed and said, “papa roach, what kind of name is that for a band? I’m not listening to that crap!” I swear about 4 or 5 months later he came over to me as if I didn’t know about them already and started preaching this band. I don’t like them anymore though. I started listening to Korn when I was in 4th grade and they only had one album out. Then something terrible happened in seventh grade, they released ‘freak on a leash’ and mtv had a field day with it. There’s another band that I knew about before most of the mtv generation, and not only were they popular now. Their music is terrible, the first two lp’s weren’t bad…I loved them back in the day but I don’t like them now…but everything after their first two is just garbage.
I’m not really sure what I was writing about, I guess one thing lead to another and here we are at the bottom of the page. I guess I’ll start working on my second journal now… |

Journal # 2
This is technically my fourth journal, but I guess since it’s the second of this weeks, I will just label them from week to week.
I’m sitting at my computer (obviously) listening to The Evens. I have successfully loaded all of my music onto this computer using the program ‘iTunes’. It automatically sets them into alphabetical order. I have a few problems with the way that it does this; because for the artist it will not count the word ‘the’, it will just go to the first letter of the next word. For example, ‘The Flaming Lips’ com before ‘Fugazi’; however, my David Bowie cd’s all came under the D’s and my Tom Waits cd’s all came under the T’s. I figure, if I am going to organize them, I might as well do it right (right?), so I changed the names to ‘Waits, Tom’ and ‘Dylan, Bob’ and so on. Other than that it is a fairly decent program.
Right now I have it on random, so it is choosing from 4,562 different songs. I really like this function, because It allows me to listen to things that I wouldn’t otherwise, (either because I’ve already listened to it a billion times or because I am never in the mood to bring it into the car or put it on my headphones or in my room, etc.) so I think that is a really cool function.
It also gives you a play count, so you can see how many times you’ve listened to something. Right now it says that I’ve listened to ‘Rocker’ by AC/DC the most, it’s because I just got their cd ‘Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap’ and that song is the best song that isn’t a single on it. Plus recently I’ve been on a rock n’ roll/metal type of mood. I’ve been listening to a lot of Slayer, AC\DC, Megadeth and Guns N’ Roses for the past 2 or 3 weeks.
I suppose this is because every Tuesday and Thursday, my friend Chris drives me to school and he is always listening to some type of hardcore or heavy metal music. Last Thursday we were listening to some French death metal band called ‘Dragonforce’ and all they sang about was junk food. He likes anything that you could bang your head to I guess. I on the other hand, prefer music written by real musicians, not bands that use nothing but power chords and have a singer that couldn’t hold a note to save his/her life. I guess from the previous paragraph it looks like I like this type of music too, but they are the extent of my heavy metal preference.

i've nothing to do and im waiting for my friend to call me back because we were going to see the wedding crashers...(which i here is really funny, but i havent seen it yet) but she hasnt gotten back to me. awesome the devils workday by modest mouse came on and i havent listened to this in so long.
in other news, i just got back from the shore...that was fun, we went out to dinner last night to some place called ninos in wildwood and it was good...to say it the way that my moms friend kathie said it... 'I'm telling you they give you so much food...the plate im getting could feed a whole african family' shes so funny...
